I would say that AMD pushed what was essentially a marketing gimmick knowing they didn't have the resources to compete with Intel.

I will digress that an Intel core with dedicated FPU does not directly correlate to an AMD core with a shared FPU, but the cores are so generally variant in performance that this detail isn't the most striking contrast.ĪMD gambled on getting software support and lost, just like Intel did with Itanium. This was because they had twice the number of currently executing processes. If you look at benchmarks with heavy parallel integer loads the FX processors could keep pace with Intel (at least up to the i7-3000 series) despite abysmal single threaded performance. You could liken this to sharing the FPU in some respects, but an AMD module can execute two properly concurrent integer processes which a Hyperthreaded Intel core cannot. Essentially if one thread is stalled (on a cache miss for example) or not using an execution resource the other can use it. It is one set of execution resources that maintains and advances two states. It is an incredibly clever design, but it isn't actually a distinct core in the same sense that AMD's integer cores are distinct. Hyperthreading essentially allows Intel to use parts of the pipeline to concurrently progress two threads of operation.
Hyperthreading a single core processor doesn't make it two distinct cores. A Hyperthreaded logical processor is not a distinct core. Surely an i7 with hyperthreading is also an 8 core
